------- Start of forwarded message ------- Date: Thu, 5 Dec 96 17:02:25 -0700 From: "Dave P. Michaels" To: tsr.mags@genie.geis.com, tsrinc@aol.com Subject: copyright question I have been maintaining an image archive FTP site for some time now, and a large percentage of the images I have available are dragon images. Most of the images were contributed by users of the site, though some were downloaded from other archive sites, and still others were scanned in-house. It was brought to my attention recently that some of the images on the site were potentially infringing upon the copyright of the source. As a result of this, I disabled access to questionable images, and have been trying to obtain information and permission for them, so that I can make them available again. Some of the images in question were apparently scanned from Dragon magazine covers and inserts, and I think there are a few scanned from Dungeon magazine covers. Many of the images appear to have been acquired from various TSR publication sources -- at least a few of which I recognize as being scanned from the artwork appearing in the AD&D 2nd edition expansion rulebook called the Tome of Magic, and from a system called Council of Wyrms. I was wondering what the general policy is on the electronic acquisition and distribution of this art work, and whether or not permission for public distribution may be granted to my site. If there are minimum (or maximum?) requirements for image quality, an attached copyright policy, or other such mandates, I can arrange for compliance, of course. Although read access to the questionable images has been disabled, I will certainly comply with any request to remove the data completely. As these images are (when read permissions are enabled) easily accessible on the web, I would be willing to incorporate advertisements into the images' thumbnail pages. However, I have not been able to find a web page for TSR (perhaps you can help me with that as well?). I would greatly appreciate any feedback you can provide. I have been flooded with requests since the 'shutdown' from users wondering when the images will again be available and such. Apparently there are many people who do not save the images on their local system, but rather download the image(s) on an as-needed basis. Thank you. - --Dave Michaels PS - the front-end to the web-ified 'thumbnails' I spoke of earlier can be entered through: http://www.nmt.edu/~dragon/graphics/TOCindex.html (please pardon the slow load time - the network between the 'backbone' and the NMT site is quite problematic lately). - -- dragon@mailhost.nmt.edu | "I wonder what news is doing..." dmichael@redwood.dn.hac.com | news@newshost <29> ps -ux news Hughes, HITS | news 4262 00:23 0:02 mkhistory http://www.nmt.edu/~dragon | "News is making history." ------- End of forwarded message ------- - -- dragon@mailhost.nmt.edu | "I wonder what news is doing..." dmichael@redwood.dn.hac.com | news@newshost <29> ps -ux news Hughes, HITS | news 4262 00:23 0:02 mkhistory http://www.nmt.edu/~dragon | "News is making history."
